About
The Royal Observatory, Greenwich is situated on a hill in Greenwich Park overlooking the River Thames. Commissioned in 1675 by King Charles II and designed by Christopher Wren, it played a major role in the history of astronomy and navigation. The Prime Meridian passes through it, giving its name to Greenwich Mean Time. The working observatory operations moved elsewhere in the 20th century, and the site is now maintained primarily as a museum.
